Careless

/ˈkɛrləs/ adjective

Definition

not paying attention or not being careful; doing something without thinking about the consequences or quality.

Etymology

From Old English 'care' (concern, worry) plus the suffix '-less' (without). Used since around 1300, it describes someone without care or concern.

Kelly Says

The suffix '-less' means 'without'—so careless literally means 'without care,' and you can add '-less' to tons of words (fearless, endless, homeless) to flip their meaning!
