Definition
A piece of luggage small enough to bring aboard an aircraft without checking it; also refers to the act of continuing despite difficulty.
Etymology
Compound of 'carry' and 'on'; the luggage sense emerged in mid-20th century with commercial aviation, while 'carry on' (as a phrase) has been used since the 1800s.
Kelly Says
The word 'carryon' literally changed how we travel—when airlines started limiting luggage, they created a whole new category of bags and a new word for a modern problem. Language evolves with technology!
