Etymology
From Latin cauterare (to burn) + -ant suffix (denoting an agent). Similar to 'caustic,' it comes from the root meaning 'to burn or eat away.'

Cauterants were medieval doctors' secret weapons—acids, lyes, and even hot metals could sterilize wounds and stop bleeding. Some patients survived infections that would otherwise have killed them, though the pain was absolutely horrific.
