Definition
Stopped doing something or ended a process that was happening.
Etymology
From Old French 'cesse' and Latin 'cessus', past participle of 'cedere' (to yield, give way). The meaning 'stop' developed through the idea of yielding or giving way.
Kelly Says
Cease-fires in wars are literally moments when the fighting 'ceases'—and historically, they're the moments when negotiators have the most leverage, making the word politically charged in peace talks. The timing of a ceasefire can determine the entire outcome of conflicts.
