Celite

/ˈseːlaɪt/ noun

Definition

A type of sedimentary rock made of fossilized shells of diatoms, used as a filtering material and absorbent.

Etymology

From Latin coelum (heaven) or possibly from Celetin (the place where it was discovered). Despite the 'celio-' prefix appearing in other words, celite is not related to abdominal terminology.

Kelly Says

Celite is basically made from billions of tiny fossilized diatom shells—it's so porous that breweries and labs use it to filter things, and NASA used it to prevent spaceship contamination!
