Celling

/ˈsɛlɪŋ/ noun

Definition

The overhead inside surface of a room or building, or the maximum height or limit of something.

Etymology

From Old French ciel (sky), from Latin caelum (sky, heaven). The word originally meant 'sky' but came to mean the interior covering in buildings that mimics the sky above.

Kelly Says

Medieval architects often decorated ceilings with elaborate paintings and gilding to make them look like heaven itself—the Sistine Chapel's ceiling took Michelangelo four years to paint and changed art forever.
