Definition
The study, promotion, or advocacy of Celtic cultures, languages, and traditions; scholarship focused on Celtic peoples and their heritage.
Etymology
From Celt plus the suffix -ism (a system of beliefs or practices). This term developed in 19th-century academic circles as Celtic studies formalized into a recognized scholarly discipline with dedicated practitioners.
Kelly Says
Celtism was actually part of a larger Romantic-era movement where Europeans got fascinated with 'primitive' and ancient cultures—and while the Celts deserve the attention, Celtism emerged partly from a very specific moment in European intellectual history.
