Censor

/ˈsɛnsər/ noun/verb

Definition

A person who examines content to remove or suppress parts deemed objectionable. As a verb, to suppress or delete parts of books, films, or other media.

Etymology

From Latin 'censor', an official who conducted the census and supervised public morals in ancient Rome. The word derives from 'censere' meaning 'to assess' or 'to judge'. The modern meaning of suppressing content developed in the 16th century.

Kelly Says

Roman censors had immense power - they could remove senators from office and even strike citizens from voting rolls for moral failings. The famous phrase 'censure' comes from the same root, showing how the concept of judgment evolved from counting people to judging their worthiness and, eventually, their ideas.
