Definition
A burial shroud or cloth, especially one treated with wax; a winding sheet for wrapping a dead body.
Etymology
From Old French ceremeent, from cere (wax, Latin cera) and -ment (suffix for objects or materials). This term has been used since medieval times for funeral wrappings.
Kelly Says
Cerements appear memorably in Shakespeare and the Bible—they're loaded with meaning about mortality and the dignity with which we treat the dead.
