Chacra

/ˈtʃɑːkrə/ noun

Definition

An Andean farm or agricultural plot, or a small parcel of land in South America.

Etymology

From Quechua 'chakra,' meaning 'field' or 'farm.' The word preserved the indigenous Quechua vocabulary after the Spanish conquest and is still used throughout the Andes for agricultural land.

Kelly Says

In Quechua-speaking regions, 'chacra' still means the small family farms that have fed Andean people for thousands of years—many families grow the same crops their ancestors did 500 years ago!
