Chafers

/ˈtʃeɪfərz/ noun

Definition

Plural of chafer; either small heating devices for warming food or drink, or large shiny beetles from the family Scarabaeidae.

Etymology

From Old French chaufer (to warm), Latin calefacere (to make warm). Later, the term was applied to the iridescent beetles, possibly because their metallic appearance resembled polished heating vessels.

Kelly Says

The 'chafer' beetle inspired its name from heating vessels because both share that gleaming, reflective quality—nature often borrows vocabulary from human-made objects!
