Chamaecyparis

/ˌkæməˈsɪpərɪs/ noun

Definition

A genus of evergreen coniferous trees commonly known as false cypress, native to North America and Asia, often used in landscaping.

Etymology

From Greek 'chamae' (low, dwarf) and 'cyparis' (cypress tree). Despite the name, these aren't true cypresses but were named for their resemblance to actual cypress species.

Kelly Says

Chamaecyparis trees are masters of adaptation—different species thrive in swamps, mountains, and coastal areas, and cultivated varieties now come in wild colors from golden yellow to silvery blue that you'd never see in nature.
