Champleve

/ʃɑːmˈpleɪv/ noun

Definition

A decorative technique in which designs are carved into a metal surface and the recessed areas are filled with colored enamel or glass that is then fused by heat.

Etymology

From French 'champ levé' literally meaning 'raised field' or 'field raised up.' The technique emerged in medieval Europe and was particularly prominent during the Romanesque period (roughly 1000-1200 CE).

Kelly Says

Champleve is like painting with fire—medieval craftspeople carved patterns into metal, filled the grooves with powdered glass, heated it until it melted and fused to the metal, creating colors that would survive for a thousand years without fading.
