Definition
A virtual space on the internet where people can communicate in real-time through text messages.
Etymology
Compound of 'chat' (informal conversation) and 'room' (enclosed space), coined in the 1980s with early computer networking. The metaphor extends physical conversation spaces to digital environments where multiple users gather virtually.
Kelly Says
Early chatrooms in the 1980s could only handle a few dozen users, but they revolutionized human communication by creating the first global real-time text conversations. They pioneered many internet conventions we use today, like emoticons, usernames, and typing indicators.
