Definition
A collective term for the science and practice of chemistry; the study of chemical substances and reactions.
Etymology
From 'chemic' or 'chemical' + '-ics' suffix (from Greek -ika). The -ics suffix creates nouns denoting sciences or fields of study.
Kelly Says
When scientists still said 'chemics' instead of 'chemistry,' it showed how new and uncertain the field was—like how we say 'economics' even though 'economology' would follow the same pattern!
