Definition
Plural of Cherokee; members of a Native American people originally from the southeastern United States, now with tribes in Oklahoma and North Carolina.
Etymology
From Tsalagi (the Cherokee's name for themselves), the term 'Cherokee' was used by European colonists and became the standard English name. Plural form with standard '-s.'
Kelly Says
The Cherokee developed their own syllabary (writing system) in the 1820s—one of the only writing systems invented by a single person (Sequoyah)—which let them preserve their language against colonization!
