Chilodon

/ˈkaɪlədɑn/ noun

Definition

A genus of microscopic, ciliated organisms (protozoans) found in freshwater environments, characterized by their tooth-like or comb-like structures.

Etymology

From Greek 'chilo' (lip) and 'odon' (tooth), literally meaning 'lip-tooth.' This scientific term was coined in the 18th-19th century by naturalists describing the physical features of these microscopic creatures observed through early microscopes.

Kelly Says

Chilodon is named for structures that look like tiny teeth around its 'lips,' but when scientists first named it, they were working with microscopes so primitive they could barely see the creature! It's amazing how we kept these old descriptive names even as we developed better microscopy and realized these aren't actually teeth at all.
