Definition
Plural of chokey; British slang for jail or prison.
Etymology
From Hindi chakki (prison), adopted by English colonizers in India and brought back to Britain, where it became slang.
Kelly Says
Chokey is a perfect example of how colonial languages pick up words from the places they colonize—British soldiers in India borrowed this Hindi word, and it became such popular British slang that most British people don't even realize it's a Hindi loanword!
