Definition
Easily angered or irritable; having a bad-tempered or irascible nature. This word describes someone prone to sudden outbursts of anger.
Etymology
From Greek 'khole' meaning bile, through the medieval theory of four bodily humors where excess yellow bile caused anger. The word traveled through Latin 'cholericus' into Middle English, maintaining its association with quick temper.
Kelly Says
Think 'collar' - when someone gets choleric, they're so angry you might grab them by the collar! The 'chol-' root also appears in cholesterol (bile-related), connecting anger to that bitter bile taste.
