Definition
An ancient surveying instrument used by Greek and Roman engineers to measure and verify level ground, considered a precursor to the modern spirit level.
Etymology
From Greek 'choros' (space/place) and 'bates' (one who treads/walks), literally 'one who walks the space.' Described in detail by the Roman engineer Frontinus and used extensively in Roman construction and water system design.
