Definition
A member of an ancient indigenous people who lived in Central America, particularly in what is now Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
Etymology
From the Chorotega language and people's own name, possibly derived from Nahuatl or proto-Chibchan roots. The Spanish conquistadors recorded this ethnonym when they encountered these civilizations in the 16th century.
Kelly Says
The Chorotega were master potters and traders who created some of Central America's most intricate pre-Columbian pottery, and they maintained complex trade networks that stretched across the isthmus—a sophisticated civilization that the Spanish conquest nearly erased from history.
