Chronotope

/ˈkrɒnətoʊp/ noun

Definition

The intrinsic connectedness of temporal and spatial relationships in literature; the way time and place are fused in narrative.

Etymology

From Greek 'chronos' (time) + 'topos' (place). Coined by literary theorist Mikhail Bakhtin. Different genres have different chronotopes — a road novel fuses time with the journey; a castle romance fuses it with the building.

Kelly Says

Time and place FUSED together in a story! A haunted house ISN'T just a place — it's a place soaked in TIME. A road trip ISN'T just movement — it's time unfolding through space. Bakhtin saw what we all feel but couldn't name! 📖🕐🗺️
