Definition
A former taxonomic class name for single-celled organisms (protozoans) that move and feed using cilia.
Etymology
From Latin ciliatus meaning 'having eyelashes' or 'fringed,' used to classify organisms based on their ciliated appearance.
Kelly Says
Before modern genetic sequencing, scientists classified organisms almost entirely by what they looked like under a microscope—so they named this whole group based on the fact that they're covered in cilia. Today we know this group is incredibly diverse and has been reclassified, but the old name stuck around in scientific literature.
