Claim

/kleɪm/ verb

Definition

To say that something is true, often without proof. It can also mean to ask for or take something that you believe belongs to you.

Etymology

From Old French "clamer," from Latin "clamare" meaning "to cry out, shout." Originally it was about loudly calling out a right or statement.

Kelly Says

Every time someone makes a claim, they’re metaphorically shouting, "This is mine" or "This is true," even if they’re whispering. The origin reminds you that claims aren’t neutral; they’re bold moves in a conversation or a conflict.
