Clasper

/ˈklæspər/ noun

Definition

A person or device that clasps, or in biology, one of the specialized appendages that male sharks and rays use to hold onto females during reproduction.

Etymology

From 'clasp' + '-er' (one who does the action). In zoology, the term was borrowed to describe the reproductive organs of cartilaginous fish that literally 'clasp' or hold during mating.

Kelly Says

Male sharks have these weird fin-like organs called claspers that look completely different from anything on land animals—they're nature's first 'appendage designed for holding,' and the word perfectly captures their function in a way that pure Latin terms wouldn't.
