Definition
The collarbone, a long curved bone that connects the shoulder to the chest and serves as the only bony connection between the arm and the axial skeleton. It acts as a strut to keep the shoulder positioned away from the chest wall.
Etymology
From Latin 'clavicula' meaning little key, diminutive of 'clavis' (key). The name comes from its resemblance to an ancient Roman key, with its distinctive S-shaped curve.
Kelly Says
Your clavicle is the most commonly fractured bone in the human body because it's relatively thin and bears the brunt of force when you fall on an outstretched arm or shoulder! Despite being called the 'collarbone,' it's actually more like a strut that keeps your shoulder from collapsing inward toward your chest.
