Definition
Relating to climate or weather conditions over long periods. Describes the typical atmospheric conditions of a region or the study of such conditions.
Etymology
From Greek 'klimatikos' from 'klima' meaning slope or inclination, originally referring to the slope of the earth from equator to pole. The Greeks noticed that weather patterns changed with latitude, which they described as different 'slopes' of the earth.
Kelly Says
The word 'climate' originally had nothing to do with weather—it described the angle or slope of the earth! Ancient Greeks were brilliant observers who realized that the sun's angle at different latitudes created different weather patterns, so they named climate zones after geometric slopes.
