Definition
A thickened, glandular band found around the body of sexually mature earthworms and leeches that secretes mucus to form a cocoon during reproduction. This structure is essential for egg-laying and protecting developing embryos.
Etymology
From Latin 'clitellae' meaning 'pack-saddle,' referring to its saddle-like appearance around the worm's body. The term was first used in zoological literature in the 18th century when naturalists noted this distinctive swelling in mature worms.
Kelly Says
The clitellum is basically a worm's built-in baby-making factory that it wears like a belt! When earthworms mate, this structure slides forward over the worm's head, picking up eggs and sperm to create a protective cocoon that gets left behind in the soil.
