Definition
A monk or member of the Cluniac order; one who followed the rules and reforms instituted by Cluny Abbey.
Etymology
From Cluny plus -ist (a suffix forming nouns that mean 'one who practices' or 'member of'). The -ist suffix was productive in forming religious and professional designations throughout the medieval and early modern periods.

The -ist suffix is incredibly useful—you can take almost any noun and create a person associated with it (pianist, socialist, botanist, Clunist), which is why it's been used in English for over 1,000 years. Modern English speakers still create new -ist words whenever movements or fields need names.
