Coach

/koʊtʃ/ noun

Definition

A coach is a person who trains and guides others, especially in sports or skills. It can also mean a type of bus or an older kind of horse-drawn carriage.

Etymology

“Coach” originally referred to a carriage, from Hungarian “kocsi (szekér),” meaning “wagon from Kocs,” a town in Hungary. By the 1800s, it was used for tutors who “carried” students toward exam success, then widened to sports and other training.

Kelly Says

A coach was first a literal vehicle, then a metaphorical one: a person who “carries” you from where you are to where you want to be. Every time you say “life coach” or “voice coach,” you’re using a hidden transportation metaphor.
