Cobaea

/koʊˈbeɪə/ noun

Definition

A genus of flowering plants from Mexico and Central America, known for their large purple or white bell-shaped flowers and climbing vines, often grown as ornamental plants.

Etymology

Named after Barnabas Cobo, a 17th-century Spanish Jesuit naturalist who lived in South America. The plant was given a Latinized version of his name to honor his botanical work.

Kelly Says

Cobaea vines are absolutely gorgeous and can grow massive—they're called 'Cup and Saucer' flowers because the sepals (the green parts) look like a saucer under the flower, and they'll cover an entire trellis in a single summer!
