Definition
A cell or organism with many nuclei that are not separated by cell walls or membranes, all sharing the same cytoplasm.
Etymology
From Greek koinos (common) + kytos (cell), coined in the 19th century to describe multinucleated protoplasmic masses in certain fungi and algae that challenged the cell theory of having one nucleus per cell.
Kelly Says
Some fungi break the rule of 'one nucleus per cell'—they create giant cells with dozens of nuclei floating around together like a biological commune, which revolutionized how scientists thought about what defines a cell.
