Definition
A worker who maintains or repairs cogwheels and mechanical gears in machinery.
Etymology
From cog (from Old Norse kaggi, a wooden peg) + man (English agent noun). A cog is a tooth on a wheel, so a cogman works with these mechanical parts.
Kelly Says
Cogmen were essential workers in the Industrial Revolution—these skilled workers kept the machines running that transformed society, yet their names are almost forgotten in history.

Ethical Language Guidance
Gender History
Generic masculine 'man' compounds historically excluded women from professional/technical roles. 'Cogman' (one who tends cogwheels/machinery) carries implicit male default in occupational language.
Inclusive Usage
Use 'cog operator' or 'cog technician' to avoid gender implication. Alternatively, 'cogperson' if gender-inclusive compound needed.
Inclusive Alternatives
["cog operator","cog technician","cogworker"]
