Definition
A device that detects radio waves, used in early wireless telegraphy; or someone who causes things to cohere.
Etymology
From cohere + -er suffix (agent noun). The radio device meaning emerged in the 1890s when physicists like Oliver Lodge invented detectors for Hertzian waves, using metal filings that cohered when sensing radio signals.
Kelly Says
The coherer was the grandfather of the radio receiver—it was so sensitive that you had to tap it with a little hammer to make the metal filings break apart before the next signal, basically the world's most frustrating reset button.
