Definition
An ancient kingdom located on the eastern coast of the Black Sea in what is now the country of Georgia, famous in Greek mythology for the Golden Fleece.
Etymology
From Greek Kolchis, possibly related to the Mingrelian language of the region or meaning 'land of gold.' The name appears extensively in classical Greek literature and mythology.
Kelly Says
Colchis was so famous for gold that the Greeks invented the legend of the Golden Fleece—and here's the amazing part: they may have actually found gold by putting sheep's wool in rivers to trap gold dust, which is a real technique!
