Definition
A hummingbird, particularly a small tropical bird that feeds on nectar with rapid wing beats.
Etymology
From Spanish and Portuguese 'colibri,' derived from Taíno (Arawakan indigenous language) 'colibrí,' the native Caribbean word for hummingbird. The term entered European languages through contact with the Americas in the 16th century.
Kelly Says
Hummingbirds—colibris—are the only birds that can fly backwards, and their hearts beat up to 1,260 times per minute; they're so metabolically intense they must eat constantly or enter a hibernation-like state called torpor!
