Definition
A small wild cat species (Leopardus colocolo, now Leopardus guttulus or related species) native to South America, with spotted fur and a body about the size of a domestic cat.
Etymology
The name 'colocolo' comes from the Mapuche language of Chile, reflecting the indigenous naming of this animal in its native habitat. The term entered scientific nomenclature in the 18th century.
Kelly Says
The colocolo was named by indigenous peoples who saw it regularly, but European scientists kept renaming it (it's had over 10 different scientific names!)—a pattern showing how colonial science would 'rename' animals already perfectly named in local languages.
