Etymology
From Latin 'colymbus' (diving bird or diver) plus '-form' (shape or form). The Latin term comes from Greek 'kolumbos,' possibly deriving from a root meaning 'to dive.' This scientific adjective emerged in ornithological taxonomy in the 19th century.

Colymbiform birds have legs positioned so far back on their bodies that they can barely walk on land—they're so specialized for diving that landlubbers once called them 'lumps' because they seemed barely able to move.
