Definition
Honoring or remembering an important person, event, or moment, usually through ceremonies, monuments, or special events.
Etymology
From Latin 'commemorare' (to remember together) = 'com-' (together) + 'memorare' (to mention, recall, from 'memor,' mindful). English adopted it in the 15th century.
Kelly Says
Every war memorial, holiday, and monument you see is technically an act of commemoration—humans are uniquely obsessed with marking time and making sure important moments aren't forgotten, which is why nearly every culture builds shrines and holds ceremonies.
