Definition
Plural of commode: either a piece of furniture that contains a chamber pot or toilet, or a low chest of drawers used in a bedroom.
Etymology
From French commode (convenient, suitable), derived from Latin commodus. In the 18th century, the term was applied to these pieces of furniture because they were convenient additions to rooms.
Kelly Says
Before indoor plumbing, the commode was basically a portable bathroom—and wealthy people had beautiful decorated ones as status symbols! The furniture meaning came later because commodes were 'conveniently' placed near beds.
