Definition
Flattened or compressed, especially used in botany to describe leaves or organisms with a flat appearance.
Etymology
From Latin complanatus, the past participle of complanare (to make flat), where com- intensifies and planare means to flatten. The word entered botanical terminology in the 18th century.
Kelly Says
Botanists need ultra-specific words to describe leaf shapes, and complanate lets them say 'very flat' more precisely than common language allows—scientific vocabulary often represents humanity's obsession with precise classification.
