Definition
A composition or composite material; in building, a type of plaster or artificial stone made from mixed materials, often used for repairs or decoration.
Etymology
Short form of 'composition' or 'composite', originating as British trade jargon in the 19th century. Builders abbreviated the longer terms for practical communication on construction sites.
Kelly Says
British builders still call cheap plaster 'compo'—it's the perfect example of how tradeworkers create their own efficient language. The word is barely known outside construction circles despite being used daily on UK building sites.
