Concentration

/ˌkɒnsənˈtreɪʃən/ noun

Definition

Concentration is the ability to focus your mind on one task or thought without being distracted. In chemistry, it also refers to how much of one substance is present in a mixture or solution.

Etymology

From 'concentrate' plus the noun-forming suffix '-ion'. It keeps the Latin root idea of 'bringing things to a center' and applies it both to mental focus and physical mixtures.

Kelly Says

Your concentration works like a spotlight: you can shine it wide and weak, or narrow and strong, but not both at once. In a solution, 'high concentration' is like packing more and more people into a small room—there’s a lot of that substance in a small space.
