Condescend

/ˌkɒndɪˈsɛnd/ verb

Definition

To condescend is to act as if you are more important or smarter than other people and are 'lowering yourself' to deal with them. It can also mean to agree to do something that you think is beneath your status.

Etymology

From Latin 'condescendere', meaning 'to descend together, to let oneself down', from 'com-' and 'descendere' ('to go down'). Over time, the idea became negative: coming 'down' to others in a proud or superior way.

Kelly Says

Condescension is politeness with poison in it—words that sound nice but carry the message 'I’m above you'. People often sense condescension more from tone and attitude than from the actual words used.

Ethical Language Guidance

Gender History

Condescension has been a common tool in patriarchal systems, where women and gender minorities were treated as less rational or less competent. This pattern appears in workplace, academic, and domestic contexts, shaping stereotypes about authority and expertise.

Inclusive Usage

Use to call out patronizing behavior regardless of gender, and avoid normalizing patterns like 'mansplaining' by treating them as humorous rather than harmful. Focus on the behavior, not stereotypes about a whole gender.

Inclusive Alternatives

["patronize","talk down to","belittle"]

Empowerment Note

When discussing condescending treatment in history or institutions, acknowledge how women’s expertise was dismissed or minimized, and highlight documented cases where they challenged such treatment.
