Definition
To combine or unite; in grammar, to inflect a verb through different tenses and persons; in chemistry, to combine chemically.
Etymology
From Latin conjugare (to join together) from con- (together) + jugare (to join, from jugum meaning yoke). The word evolved through multiple scientific and linguistic disciplines, each adopting it to describe joining or combining processes.
Kelly Says
The word 'conjugate' literally means 'yoked together'—Romans used it to describe oxen joined by a yoke, and scientists loved it so much they borrowed it for chemistry, grammar, and biology to describe any joining process!
