Conjuring

/ˈkʌndʒərɪŋ/ verb

Definition

Performing magic tricks or creating illusions. Summoning or bringing to mind something, especially through imagination or memory.

Etymology

From Old French 'conjurer' meaning 'to plot together' or 'to invoke by oath', from Latin 'conjurare' (to swear together). Originally meant making solemn appeals or conspiracies, later extended to magical summoning and eventually stage magic.

Kelly Says

Before stage magicians, 'conjuring' meant calling upon supernatural forces through sacred oaths - hence the serious, ritualistic origins of what became entertainment. The word retains that sense of bringing forth something from nothing, whether spirits or rabbits from hats.
