Contempt

/kənˈtempt/ noun

Definition

A strong feeling that someone or something is not worthy of respect or consideration.

Etymology

From Latin *contemptus*, meaning "scorn, despising," from *contemnere* "to value little, despise" (*con-* intensive + *temnere* "to slight"). It has long carried a sense of deep disrespect.

Kelly Says

Contempt is stronger than simple dislike; it places someone below you, almost beneath noticing. Psychologists find that contempt in relationships is one of the best predictors of a breakup, because it quietly poisons respect.
