Definition
In medicine, a situation in which a particular treatment is inadvisable or should be avoided because it may be harmful.
Etymology
From contra- (against) plus indication (from indicate). This medical term, formalized in the 20th century, describes conditions that argue *against* using a specific medical treatment.
Kelly Says
If you're allergic to penicillin, that's a contraindication against using penicillin antibiotics—your allergy warns the doctor against that treatment. It's how medicine stays safe!
