Definition
Plural of contributory; people or things that contribute to something, or shareholders in a company who may be called upon to pay additional funds.
Etymology
From contributory + -ies (plural), with contributory from Latin contribuere. In law, contributories are specifically members of a company liable for debts.
Kelly Says
In Victorian England, if your company went bankrupt, you weren't just a shareholder—you were a 'contributory' and could be forced to pay the company's debts, making being an investor genuinely risky.
