A book containing recipes and instructions for preparing food. May also include cooking techniques and nutritional information.
Etymology
Simple compound of 'cook' from Old English 'cōc' (borrowed from Latin 'cocus') and 'book' from Old English 'bōc.' First appeared in English in the mid-19th century as printed recipe collections became popular.

The first known cookbook was written by a Roman named Apicius around the 1st century CE, but cookbooks didn't become common until the printing press made books affordable. Before then, recipes were closely guarded family secrets passed down orally from generation to generation.
